ARTICLE: "Study: E15ethanol damages boat engines- Ethanol supporters contend that research isn'tfair"

From: The Argus Leader,November 2nd, 2011

Excerpts: "A blend of15 percent ethanol and gasoline caused so much damage to boat engines during agovernment-funded study that the testing of two of three motor types endedearly.

Theethanol made the engines run hotter, and a rod bearing broke, destroying a200-horsepower engine that was being tested, lawmakers were told Wednesday.Testing of a 300-horsepower version had to be shut down early when its valvescracked or broke. A third, smaller engine finished the test but also had problems... "We’re spendingmoney to test a fuel they (boat owners) can’t use. It’s just maddening,” saidRon Lamberty, senior vice president of the American Coalition forEthanol."

Fuel-TestersComments: Since we know many stations have been selling over-blended E10 fuelfor years (based on testing results) all this study reinforces is that boatengines (and others) require availability of ethanol-free fuel.

Article: Ethanol industry reorients discussion about E15 and boating

From: Ethanol ProducerMagazine, Nov 8th, 2011.

Excerpt:

The subject came up during a Nov. 2 U.S.House of Representatives Energy and Environment Subcommittee hearing on motorfuel standards. Kristy Moore, director of technical services for the RenewableFuels Association, further pointed out that marine engines are built to run ongasoline containing no ethanol. It’s really no big surprise, she said, thatsome abnormalities were found with the use of E15.
